About us

The name "Abra" is derived from the Amazigh word "abrid," meaning path, passage, or road. This little business embodies a fascinating journey for us, that began with a passion for rugs and has blossomed into a network of meaningful relationships and friendships with Amazigh weavers, their families, and our Moroccan team, who assist us in crafting our rugs and managing logistics.

Over time, our focus has continually evolved. While our passion for rugs has remained steadfast, our business decisions, processes, and pricing have centered around how to support and empower local communities of women makers to our best ability. We aim to preserve and celebrate the rich and captivating Amazigh culture while sharing the essence of this extraordinary world with you.

Our weaving
partners

We genuinely appreciate the immense effort that goes into creating our rugs and the artisans themselves, which is why ethical sourcing is of paramount importance to us. Our weaver partners are the heart and soul of our business. We collaborate with numerous women-led weaving collectives across Morocco, each producing rugs specific to their region.

Our rugs are products of domestic weaving; the weavers live in rural communities, where they care for their extended families and often work the land surrounding their homes. This ability to weave from home allows them to strike a balance between their craft and household chores.

We are committed to paying fair prices for the rugs: we never offer below the artisan's asking price and every so often we adjust our prices upward to ensure fairness. Our regular orders provide significant income for our weavers, and for many families, rug-making has become their primary source of livelihood. We take pride in this responsibility and work closely with the artisans, constantly consulting throughout the rug-making process. This collaboration ensures we fully understand the story behind each rug, the time and effort invested in its creation, and that the weaver is compensated accordingly.

Our rugs

For Amazigh women, weaving is a powerful means of self-expression. They do not merely create functional objects; they craft unique pieces rich in symbolism. Our rugs embody the personality and humor of their weavers, reflecting not only unique narratives but also the universal experience of womanhood. Each rug is a captivating creation that invites you to explore its intricate details, making it easy to feel a connection with them.

Each rug in our collection is selected individually or custom-made for us, resulting in a thoughtfully curated assortment. The art of rug weaving is a traditional, time-intensive process that requires exceptional technical skill, precision, and dedication. Every step, from processing the wool to washing the finished product, is done by hand, and weaving styles vary greatly from region to region.

The deep pile wool surfaces of our rugs complement modern interiors beautifully, adding personality and coziness to any space. They possess a rustic texture, crafted from thick wool yarns or recycled fabrics. These rugs exemplify the beauty of imperfection, often displaying unevenness, asymmetry, and even outright flaws, which only enhance their charm and character.
